Day 5: Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is about 2 hours driving from Brussels. The old architecture is beautiful; the setting with its old impenetrable fortress walls is very formidible. There seem to be more rules/rigidity -- want milk with that coffee or tea? That .20 euros extra. The city is spotless. No litter in sight. Contrasting that, it is jarring to see unaesthetic "temporary" wiring that appears to have been there for years dangling from the fence of a beautiful old building or a permanent, unappealingly cold walkway connecting an upper floor of a fine old building to a newer one.

Belgium was able to keep McDonald's and other chain restaurants out of its beautiful plazas, but Luexembourg has them ringing their old squares. But, I was able to spot a phone booth in town.

The cute hotel is located in a central square with a great view of Notre Dame cathedral.

The old town walls are very impressive:

The old buildings are beautiful and the city is spotless.

Luxembourg is a small country in a small world. I heard someone saying, "Pat, is that you?" It was my office building super from five years ago. He was on a motorcycle tour! What a pleasant surprise!
